Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is leading the charge in developing high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology in partnership with MIT. Our mission is to deploy compact fusion power plants quickly and affordably to combat climate change. Backed by prominent investors, CFS brings together experts in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing to deliver clean, limitless fusion power.

Program Details:

  • Duration: 12-16 week internship program
  • Hours: 40-50 hours per week
  • Location: On-site in Devens, MA
  • Compensation: Hourly salary based on year in school
  • Requirements: Must be authorized to work in the United States

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and qualify manufacturing techniques, processes, flow maps, and work instructions for superconducting magnet components and assemblies
  • Support quality activities in manufacturing
  • Contribute to the development of high-field magnet insulation components and joints
  • Design tooling improvements and document CAD designs
  • Engage in creative problem-solving, report writing, and data collection
  • Assist in hands-on assembly of test pieces
  • Develop assembly methods and tools for SPARC assembly goals
  • Collaborate with design and equipment engineers on custom automation equipment
  • Conduct multiscale structural computational modeling of high-field superconducting magnets
  • Support HTS R&D team projects
  • Engage in systems engineering related to superconducting magnets

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing an engineering degree with a focus in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace engineering
  • Hands-on experience through academic research, project teams, internships, or related activities
  • Demonstrated exceptional results in various pursuits
  • High self-motivation with strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
